Congratulations! Double Achievements: Shohei Ohtani wins National League player of month for May and NAMED 2025 MVP amid controversial claims from rivals…
Ohtani tied the Dodgers franchise record for any month in May by leading the majors with 15 home runs. Ohtani received his second career player of the month honor with LA and his sixth overall.
Dodgers designated hitter and soon-to-be pitcher Shohei Ohtani on Tuesday was named National League player of the month for May, the sixth career honor for the superstar.
Ohtani hit .309/.398/.782 with a 213 wRC+ during May and led the majors with 15 home runs, tying a Dodgers record for most home runs in a month. He led the National League in slugging percentage, OPS (1.180), wRC+, home runs, extra-base hits (21), and runs scored (31). He was second in the league with 27 runs batted in, two behind Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.
Ohtani also scored 32 runs through the end of April, making him the first Dodger to score at least 30 runs in consecutive baseball months. The caveat needed is that March (mostly a recent phenomenon) is lumped in with April (much like October regular season games counted with September). Ohtani actually scored nine runs in March and 23 in April.
His 64 runs scored are nine more than any other major leaguer this season, and the most by any player through 60 team games since Frank Thomas scored 66 runs through the first White Sox 60 games in 1994.
Freddie Freeman was among others in consideration for the award after hitting .410/.462/.638 during May, leading the NL in batting average and hits, and was second in OPS (1.100), wRC+ (202), on-base percentage, doubles (10), and third in slugging percentage.
Ohtani also won player of the month last September with the Dodgers, and captured American League player of the month with the Angels four times — June 2021, July 2021, June 2023, July 2023.
