Banks played exclusively left tackle for the last six years (three in high school, three at Texas) with zero snaps at any other spot in college. He has the requisite height, weight, and athleticism to stay at tackle, though his 33.5-inch arms barely meet NFL standards for the position. Banks’ ultimate role in New Orleans will be based on his ability to add positional versatility as well as the Saints’ needs along their offensive line.
Head coach Kellen Moore revealed that rookie Banks will be tested at multiple positions this summer as the Saints aim to determine their best five-man offensive line combination, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.
During rookie minicamp, Banks took snaps at left tackle, right tackle, and left guard, suggesting he could potentially contribute at any of those spots in his first season. Last year, the Saints rotated several O-line combinations, with 2024 first-round pick Taliese Fuaga starting all 17 games at left tackle and Trevor Penning stepping in for the injured Ryan Ramczyk on the right side. Following Ramczyk’s retirement in April and Penning entering the final year of his contract, the team is now looking to solidify a long-term tackle duo.
Given that Fuaga primarily played right tackle in college, the Saints could consider moving him back to his natural spot, allowing Banks to stay at left tackle. However, if they decide to keep Fuaga on the blind side, Banks may shift to right tackle — a transition that could prove challenging, as seen when the Chargers successfully moved 2024 first-rounder Joe Alt from left to right tackle as a rookie.
